Updated: Oct 22

As spring and summer approach we get excited for traveling and events away from home, but as days become longer and temperature rises, so do burglary rates. You shouldn't have to worry. Be carefree on your next adventure by following these safety tips to deter burglary from your home and car.

Protect Your Home

Almost two-thirds of burglaries occur during daylight hours.

Thieves don't want to run into people which is why they try to strike when people are away from home. A burglar might case the neighborhood and look for signs of vacant homes during the day, which homes have security signs on their front lawn, and which homes have dogs. After reviewing their notes, they will more than likely pick the home with the least amount of risk. ***If its trash day, try to break down boxes from expensive purchases and place inside of bags or directly inside of your trashcan. Don't display your new electronics for burglars to make note of.

We can't always be home but we can follow a few tips to keep our homes safe and fool would be burglars.

Over one third (36.2%) of burglars enter a property through the front door or window.

Burglars are going to try the easiest way of entry first. No need for them to jump your fence or break a window if the front door is unlocked or garage door open. Having a large household, it can be hard to know if someone has forgotten to lock a door or window after opening it. You could go days or weeks with either of them unlocked, so it is best to check points of entry every now and then. If you aren't outside in your front yard or working in your garage, close your garage. You don't want someone to sneak in and grab something as you are in your backyard mowing the lawn.

Burglars are three times more likely to target properties that don’t use a security system.

Security system signs and stickers are a great way to notify thieves that your home is being monitored. In addition to a home security system, investing in door bell cameras and mounted visible cameras can add an extra layer of protection.

Park Safely in Your Driveway

Motor vehicle theft is the only property crime that continues to rise every year.

If choosing to park outside, lock your doors. Be sure to keep all valuables stashed away and out of sight, this includes the garage door opener. Take in consideration, thieves could enter your car, steal your garage door opener, and come back later to gain easy access to your home.

Most auto burglaries occur during the night.

Keep the porch lights on and install motion detection lights. Burglars don't want to be seen. A well lit home will provide more visibility to any events happening in your driveway.

Following these tips won't guarantee your home safe from a burglar. It will however make it harder for them to break into your property and do so without being noticed.
