Safety Tips: Strangers and Door-to-Door Solicitors

With warmer weather approaching we are to expect more and more activity at our front doors. Not all solicitors notice or pay attention to our front entrance community "No Soliciting" sign, which is why we need to be aware of the safest way to handle these annoying knocks. These are excellent home safety tips to teach your children as well.

Keep these tips in mind next time a stranger knocks on your door, and please be safe if you choose to interact with these individuals.

If You See Something – Say Something! If you see any suspicious activity in our community in the areas of our homes, the amenities-pool, tennis courts, playground, or parking lot - call 911 or the non-emergency number 770-957-9121. You can remain anonymous but it is important that you call!

Tip #1 - Never Open Your Door to a Stranger

Ignoring a strangers knock is ok. Opening the door gives the stranger access to your household and those inside. Instead, use a peephole or door camera to see who is there before you open it. Tell your kids not to answer the door without your express permission.

Tip #2 - Do Not Engage in a Conversation

Talking to the solicitor is exactly what they want. By doing so, you are encouraging them to stay at your doorstep and in our neighborhood. Instead, send the right message by telling them "no thank you" and closing the door. Don't ever feel like you should let them into your home. If you have a storm door, keeping it locked and closed make it easy for you to see and speak safely through the door.

Tip #3 - Don't Let Solicitors Approach You If You Are Outside

If a solicitor approaches you while you are outside send them the right message. Tell them you are not interested and go inside your home.

Tip #4 - Keep Your Identity Safe

Don't ever feel like you are obligate to give money, agree to services, buy a product, or give out personal information to a solicitor, even if they state they are collecting money for charity. These days it is hard to determine if someone is being legitimate or trying to scam you.

Never give your credit card information or a check to solicitors. If you already purchased something using these methods and now feel uncomfortable about it, cancel the transaction as soon as possible.

Tip #5 - Watch Where They Go After Leaving Your Doorstep

If you have trouble getting rid of a solicitor or you notice them being suspicious - looking into windows, testing locks, entering backyards - call the 911 or the non-emergency number 770-957-9121 for assistance. Have a description you can provide regarding their features, behaviors, and or vehicle.

If you are part of the St. Andrew's of Rockport Facebook page, let others know of the situation so they too can be alert. Working together as a community is the best way for us to reduce the risk of crime and enhance the security our our neighborhood.

It's Better to Stay Safe than Polite

Sit down as a family and discuss safety tip guidelines you plan to follow. Having these guidelines in place will keep you, your family, and our community safe.
